The Nuclear Industry Association has applied for a justification decision for Rolls-Royce SMR’s reactor design. Our application makes the case that the benefits of clean, firm, flexible power from the reactor would far outweigh any potential risks, which are in any event rigorously controlled by robust safety features, including passive safety systems, built into the design, in line with the UK’s regulatory requirements.

Sizewell C has been granted a nuclear site licence in a significant step forward for the new nuclear power project on the Suffolk coast.  

It’s the first time that the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) has granted a site licence for a new nuclear power project since issuing one to Hinkley Point C in Somerset in 2012. It comes into force today and follows a rigorous process of scrutiny and assessment by the nuclear regulator.

Rolls-Royce SMR has enlisted GSE Solutions to develop a power station simulator, as it continues to mature the design of its Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology and remains on track to complete Step 2 of the Generic Design Assessment this summer.  

Secretary of State Ed Miliband appoints Chris Stark to head new Mission Control tasked with turbocharging UK to clean power by 2030.

Chris Stark will lead a new control centre to turbocharge the government’s mission to provide Britain with cheaper and clean power by 2030, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband announced today (Tuesday 9 July). 

Heysham 2 power station is on track to become the UK’s most productive nuclear power station after hitting a significant generation milestone. It is one of seven Advanced Gas-Cooled Reactor stations that were designed and built as a fleet several decades ago and which together have operated alongside coal, then gas and more recently wind and solar sources.

A new video update from Hinkley Point C shows how the project is getting ready to install the heart of the new nuclear power station. Following last year’s “Dome Lift” when the reactor building roof was lifted in place, it features preparations to install the first nuclear reactor, the massive steam generators and the world’s largest turbine.

Two weeks ahead of schedule, the first of the SIXEP Continuity Plant’s two gantry cranes has been installed at Sellafield in Cumbria, England

This is a major milestone and illustrates some of the extraordinary work that has been carried out by the SCP team, led by Altrad Babcock’s John Hall and Stefan Dipper.

The SIXEP Continuity Plant (SCP), one of the flagship projects being delivered by the Programme and Project Partners (PPP) at Sellafield, it is a vital major project which will clean effluent from site facilities.

The Rolls-Royce SMR Module Development Facility - housed within University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre’s existing Factory 2050 facilities - will produce working prototypes of the individual modules that will be assembled into Rolls-Royce SMR power plants.
