The Principal Engineering Manager is responsible for planning and leading the development of design within a defined scope area, ensuring effective integration and acceptance of that design across the wider programme. The role provides senior technical leadership, drives systems engineering approaches, and ensures that engineered solutions are safe, compliant, and aligned with programme objectives.
The Principal Engineering Manager will be degree‑qualified and will initially oversee the defined scope area across a portfolio of projects.
Technical Leadership & Strategy
- Lead the development of engineering strategy, programme planning, and systems engineering approaches within the assigned scope.
- Act as a Subject Matter Expert and technical authority within the relevant engineering discipline.
- Provide authoritative guidance on engineering design, integration, and technical decision‑making.
Design Development & Assurance
- Lead the formulation, review, and assurance of engineering strategies, feasibility assessments, and design development activities.
- Oversee technical review processes, ensuring design outputs meet safety, quality, cost, and performance requirements.
- Support the determination of site or system suitability from an engineering perspective and contribute to comparative evaluations.
Stakeholder Engagement & Representation
- Engage with internal and external stakeholders, regulators, and partner organisations to support programme delivery.
- Represent the engineering function in consultations, public engagement activities, and technical discussions.
- Act as Intelligent Customer for relevant Development Consent Order (DCO) or regulatory submissions.
Requirements & Systems Engineering
- Lead the development and management of system requirements within the assigned scope.
- Ensure engineering solutions are developed using robust systems engineering principles.
- Translate programme requirements into clear, deliverable engineering outputs.
Design Integration & Delivery
- Support the development of Initial Concept Design (ICD) strategies, scope definition, and procurement activities.
- Guide design development from concept through to regulatory submission and acceptance.
- Work closely with engineering, safety case, and technical teams to deliver integrated design solutions.
Leadership, Governance & Assurance
- Provide strong leadership across engineering activities, fostering a performance‑driven and collaborative culture.
- Ensure engineering processes and procedures are fit for purpose, compliant, and consistently applied.
- Provide management oversight for direct reports and supply chain contractors where appropriate.
- Maintain effective working relationships with key partners and stakeholders across the programme.
Programme & Delivery Support
- Apply experience of the engineering design lifecycle, cost control, and scheduling to support programme delivery.
- Ensure engineering deliverables are produced to the required standards and within agreed timescales.
- Drive continuous improvement across engineering processes and ways of working.
